The Larry Berg Time Trial Puzzle Competition 2024 is scheduled over two dates. On Thursday January 2nd, 2025 from 4 pm – 7 pm and on Saturday January 4th, 2025 from 12 pm – 3 pm, being held at the High River Library. Larry Berg is the sponsor of this event with Paul Milligan as the registrar-timer.
Berg originally started this competition as a tribute to his parents Knute and Alvilde. Berg would encourage people to step away from the television and other electronic devices, instead to think and solve the 4 ringer puzzle.
The competition is open to everyone from any age, with competitors removing and replacing the wand with 16 moves through the 4 ringer puzzle. Competitors are allowed five attempts, with their fastest time, if under 20.0 seconds, to qualify them into the competition. If there are 10 qualified competitors the prize money will be distributed. There is $2,000 in total prize money distributed over 5 prizes. The prize breakdown is: 1st $1,000 - 2nd $500 - 3rd $250 - 4th $150 - 5th $100. There is a life-time limit of $2,000 for an individual competitor.
The four ringer puzzle used in the competition are available to borrow, similar to a book, at the High River, Okotoks and Nanton libraries, for practice between competitions. Also available at these three libraries are the 4 ringer puzzle brochure for additional information.
